Beautiful Valley, BOM 2012

Beautiful Valley

Exclusive Block of the Month Designed by Diana Louie

This beautiful Quilt has 12 embroidered and colored blocks featuring the flora and fauna that is or has been significant to the Beautiful Hudson Valley, either for sheer beauty or economic reasons. They alternate with a block called Mountain Star, for you can have no valley without the mountains around it. The finished piece is 55 inches square but other size options are available.

Each month you will receive the oversized white background square for the embroidered block, the line drawing actual size for transfer, and a coloring guide. During the monthly meeting (attendance optional ) all needed techniques will be demonstrated and you will be given the written instructions, including other size or setting options. The Alternate blocks and the border are worked out of your scrap box, using them up and helping to neaten and organize your stash, and keeping costs low. Organized color options will be discussed and samples shared as well.   There are occasional bonus projects too!!

You will receive all of this for a mere $10.00 per monthly block. Simply come in during the month or pick it up at the meetings. If you want even more value, pay for the full year of patterns before January 31, 2012, for $85.00. for an overall savings of fifteen dollars!!!   That is a month and a half for FREE!!

If you wish to create your quilt using the exact same fabrics as we did, achieving a more artistic look, an optional finishing fabrics kit will be available for $100.00 it includes three graded values each of green and blue hand painted Hoffman fabrics and cream foundation fabric which shows as the star. Dye lots in these fabrics can be vastly different and so the kits will be available only while supplies last, first come first serve, and one per customer.

Materials and equipment that you will need,
or that will make your project easier to do:

A sewing machine - while this can be done entirely by hand, the work will progress faster and often with less distortion of the string pieced blocks.

Rotary Cutting tools, an 18x 24 mat, long ruler and 6 inch square ruler, and a cutter with a good blade.
a Removable fabric marker, we like the Quilters Ultimate Marking Pencil.
a piece of template plastic or similar.
Intense Pencils, the more colors the better!!!
A small synthetic paintbrush, again a variety is better.
a small water container
a Clear Acrylic Clipboard for a painting surface and to double as a light box
a folder or notebook to hold notes , patterns and handouts
baggies or the square plastic takeout containers for keeping pieces sorted out.
an embroidery hoop 9-10 inches
small scissors
holder for embroidery floss
Embroidery floss and other threads. ( colors will be up to you although we have a set that matches the Inktense Pencils )   You could also do this as traditioanl Redwork,  without the coloring if that makes your heart sing.
If you choose to make this totally scrappy, you will need lots of scraps, for an approximate total of 7-8 yards. What a great way to clean out that sewing space!!!!!
